Karen's photo challenge: photographing the light

I joined Karen's 26 weeks photo challenge a couple of weeks ago and the second theme was to photograph the light. I know she didn't mean to actually photograph lights but when you see where I have been this past week, I couldn't help the literal interpretation....

1. Yes, Vegas baby! lol! Just driving onto the Strip in Las Vegas you can't help taking photos of all the lights. Still on auto for this first photo taken from the car
Shutter speed 1/15, f4, focal length 24mm, ISO 560

2. Another part of our road trip, I chose this one as a favorite because I really worked on my aperture priority taking a series of photos at this spot. I did have to edit it afterwards to increase exposure (hopefully I will understand how the exposure relates to the f stop at some point)
Shutter speed 1/400, f11, focal length 110mm, ISO 400

3. And last, more Vegas. My husband actually helped me with the settings (mostly increasing the ISO) on this one and it turned out great especially without a tripod
Shutter speed 1/50, f4.8, focal length 32, ISO 1600

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday! I have to catch up on laundry now that we are back home!

  3. Well what can I say, as Sian says "perfect place to photograph lights" :)

First photo, love it, great sense of movement in the vehicles, maybe trip a slight crop off the top, the lights are frozen beautifully. My favourite.

Second photo - really like the angle you have taken this at. I would probably of used a much lower ISO (assuming this was taken during daylight)which would have helped with the exposure. I like the composition and the sky looks interesting.

Third Photo - really like this one as well, what is it of? Once again a tiny crop on the right hand side. Love the contrast in colours, stands out a treat.

Thank you for taking part and hope you enjoyed it. Three lovely photos.

  4. Three lovely photos.

Photo 1 - Good exposure and I like the way you've caught the moving cars. I probably would have cropped the top of the photo (as Karen has suggested)but you've definitely captured the atmosphere in this shot.

Photo 2 - this is my favourite and I like the horizontal lines created by the various elements of the photo. I probably would have tweaked the exposure for more contrast but this would have changed the atmosphere of the photo you've taken. I like the dof and the feeling of distance. I can imagine this on my wall!

Photo 3 - A very vibrant photo. I love the colour saturation.

Well done, a great set of photos.

  5. Hi Nathalie, looks as if you had a great time in Vegas.....and you most certainly had to photograph the lights.

The first one is beautiful, love all the colours in the lights and the moving cars.

The atmosphere created by your camera setting in the second is great. I too would have used a lower ISO for the daytime.....if i remember to change it that is :)

and you have me wondering about the third photo, love the vibrancy - at first I thought fireworks maybe, and then wondered if it was a huge water fountain lite up. You will have to enlighten us Nathalie xx

I love all three and wold not change any of them its just a shame you can't have the sound effects for the third one. My fav is the 2nd one, I think you have captured this one beautifully. I might have cropped it to letter box to see how it looks xx
